In today's blog post I wanted to talk about contentment. I know I have mentioned it in other posts, but it's been something that I've been learning a LOT about recently and I felt obligated to share.
I know a lot of other people in their 20's can struggle with contentment, no matter what stage of life you are in. As a young adult it can be difficult to be content with what we have, what we look like, and where we are in life when social media is such a huge part of our everyday life. If the very first thing you do in the morning is unlock your phone and check Instagram, then the first thing you are allowing in your mind is comparison. Comparison is the ENEMY of contentment.
Let's talk a little bit about what contentment actually means... according to Google the definition of contentment is "a state of happiness and satisfaction."
Another way of putting it is a content heart doesn't need more and doesn't need less. They are completely happy with what they have and are not eagerly expecting more.
Another way to think about this is look at how we live our lives. I know a lot of my blog posts talk about self love and learning how to be happy in your own skin, but I think there is a huge difference between living out of a place of confidence and living self-focused. When we live self-focused we compare ourselves to others, which leads to jealousy. Jealousy can lead to discontentment and dissatisfaction. All together this will cause us to be constantly searching. Whether it's searching for the next best job position or even the next best person to fill that void. When we live self-focused we are so self absorbed and focused on what we DON'T have that we miss out on the impact that the blessings already in our life were meant to give to you.
When we live our lives God-focused and redirect our energy towards others, we start noticing the blessings He's given us, which automatically leads to gratitude. We need to realize that each of us are unique and we have our own story which is NOT supposed to be the same as anyone else's. This is what will lead to contentment and satisfaction. Transforming our lives into these cookie cutter situations that we believe will bring us happiness will still feel us leaving empty and unfulfilled. If we just stop living so self-focused and focus on what we already have and how we can utilize those blessings, life becomes a whole lot easier.
I hope that this post encouraged you and helped you realize that even in a world full of social media and comparison, that you can still find contentment and peace.
